Holiday Lighting and Discount Power Savings!

Thanksgiving and Black Friday marked the official start of the holiday season.  In the days since, you can’t help but notice all the cars on the road with Christmas trees strapped to their roofs.  Everyone’s in high decorating mode setting up Holiday lighting displays. Like the Griswold’s in the movie “Christmas Vacation”, everyone wants to have the most admired house in the neighborhood!

However, if you don’t take precautions, those holiday lights can cost you plenty.  Some people see an increase of as much as 40% in their electric bill during the holidays.

By switching to Discount Power, you automatically save money on your electric bill (as much as 10%).  However, we have a few tips to help you save even more without having to turn into the Grinch.

For starters, if you haven’t done so already, ditch the old school incandescent holidays lights and invest in some LED lights.  It makes a big difference.   Looking at the box of regular incandescent lights, they use 40.8 watts per 100 light strand (0.0408 kW). The 100-light strand of LEDs used 8 watts (0.008 kW).

There are also solar-powered LED light kits, but from the package they use less than 3 watts of energy, which means they are significantly dimmer.  Also, consider how long you intend to leave the lights on.  Most people have their house decorated from Thanksgiving to New Years (about 45 days).  By cutting back the amount of time you leave the lights on, you can also save big.  Perhaps the easiest way to do that is to put your lights on a timer.

Finally, another way to achieve the festive look is to use colored Halogen floodlights.  The light they give off is more intense and uses less energy.

Wild Weather in the Northeast

Our hearts go out to those in New York, New Jersey and many coastal towns that were affected by Hurricane Sandy’s destruction.  A few of us here at Discount Power lost properties & power, but most were spared the harsher realities of the hurricane’s force.

No sooner did Sandy’s wrath disappear when Connecticut was then hit by a classic Nor’Easter.  As the night wore on, many of us would realize 8-10 inches of snow on the ground the next morning.  This winter may prove to be a wild one, but the crew at Discount Power will continue to provide the service you’ve come to respect and trust with savings that can really add up!

We have launched our new $6.99 Introductory Offer with our $100 Dining Card Program included for new customers only.  Our new Referral Program also allows you to participate by introducing friends to Discount Power.  Upon your friend ‘s successful enrollment, you will receive a $100 Dining Card from Discount Power.  Your friend that enrolled will also receive a $100 Dining Card as well as be eligible to introduce their friends for more Dining Cards.  This program can decrease the cost of your electricity and lower your dining cost significantly!

Don’t Sweat the High Temps with Discount Power!

Dear Friends,

I hope you all had the opportunity to see our commercial during the recent Summer Olympics. It was exciting for all of us here at Discount Power to participate in the Olympic experience. Boy, and what an experience it was! From Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman to Missy Franklin, Michael Phelps and the entire USA Swim Team, to our first diving medals in forever, the excitement and pride abounded. And we haven’t even mentioned the GOLD & SILVER in woman’s beach volleyball, or both basketball teams and the outstanding achievements on the track. However, as an electric company, we can’t get too upset about our American sprinters losing to a guy named BOLT.

While our attention was drawn to London, we were experiencing something rather extraordinary here at home – record heat. While, I knew it was hot all month, as my AC never went off, what I didn’t realize was that July was the hottest month on record in the USA. According to the National Climatic Data Center the average temperature in the continental USA for July was 77.6˚, hotter than any month in recorded history (record keeping started in 1895).

Consumers all over the country are just now starting to feel the full economic effect of July’s heat wave. The electric bills consumers received in August were noticeably higher given the spike in usage. So, what does this mean to Discount Power customers? At our current rates vs. the utilities, the savings for Discount Power customers for July will exceed $500,000! Savings in July averaged $14.00 for CL&P customers and $22.00 for UI customers. This is real savings that Discount Power is proud to provide to its customers. If you are not with Discount Power I can only assume that you don’t need to save a few hundred dollars a year. However, if you don’t fall into that category then Elisa, Kyle and Evette in our customer service department (203-929-3200) are looking forward to hearing from you.  And, don’t forget to tell your friends and family about the savings as well!

Talk to you soon,

Going for the Gold in Connecticut

Every two years now the world gathers for a celebration of human success. The
Olympic games are filled with everything that is good about our global community,
camaraderie, sportsmanship, perseverance, national pride and a true sense of
accomplishment, It’s a time when families gather together to watch the beauty and
grace of gymnastics, the speed and power of track and field and the athleticism of
basketball. The athlete’s stories are often fascinating, heartbreaking and triumphant
all at the same time. It’s why we all love it and it’s why we watch. For myself, as
a sports guy, The Olympics, like the Super Bowl, World Series and other great
championship events, will hold my attention and will be a central part of my life for
the next couple of weeks.

Discount Power commercialDespite my excitement about the upcoming Olympics, the games were actually off my radar until our Marketing Department approached me with an idea. Theysaid to me, “Let’s do Discount Power’s first ever Television Commercial and air it during the Olympics”. It was a brilliant idea. So our Creative Director, Steven Bové and Michael Ferreri, Acting Head of Sales & Marketing, and I undertook creating a Discount Power commercial. And it will air many many times during the Olympics. We here at Discount Power are very excited about the commercial, about being part of the Olympics viewing experience and taking our first big step into the public consciousnesses.

Discount Power commercialWe are very pleased with the outcome of what was an intense two to three day creative process. We hope you are as well. We would love to hear your thoughts, feelings and comments on the commercial. Please post here on our blog or our Facebook page and let us know what you think.

We here at Discount Power hope you are enjoying your Olympic experience and that you join us in wishing our athletes great success in London.
